Hidden Heart <3

I am always seeing "heart" shapes everywhere.... I see them in oil stains on the street, in the way that a piece of string folds over in the wind. I see them in the holes that you can find in old trees or the leaves of some trees... Hearts seem to be everywhere.... I use to think that they were a man made shape... but in recent years I have come to believe that they are a natural shape that can be found all over nature. =)

This is a recreated version of an older piece... and I wanted it to be my end of the year blog art piece. =) If you look in the piece.... you can see where my heart is hidden. =)

Lost Sounds

I was just thinking about different sounds that I heard while growing up - just anything and everything that created sounds like old dvds going into the machine. The way a tape deck, 8 track, or the OLD car push channel buttons looked, felt and the sound as you pushed them. I was thinking about the way that when you transitioned thru channels on the old radios or dial tvs - the click click click or the static moving in and out of the stations.... all that noise and sounds.

How all those sounds that a whole culture has grown up and grown old too... have disappeared with the new digital age.

And how odd it is to think that when your watching an old movie there are all these types of sounds that are heard that you KNOW what they are or meant (like a telephone that has been left off the hook.)  because you lived thru them...   But kids today have no idea what those sounds are or mean. If it was a warning or notifying you about something...   It isn't a "bad" thing that they don't - just odd to think about.

I was also thinking back to OLDER times... and all the sounds of nature that we no longer can hear - even SILENCE has been "silenced" hahaha...  Just the thought of sitting silently for longer then 5 minutes is not something that we often do - muchless days or weeks.... makes me wonder how vastly different our lives are and our ways of seeing life and thinking about it....

Seriously? 79 million to Bomb the moon???

Beyond Eden Show Coming Soon!

16 galleries and a BUNCH of artist/ great artwork-- ALL at the LA Municipal Art Gallery!!!

I have been helping curate part of the show. It has been amazing to see all of the rooms totally empty and each day fill up a lil more. Their is a bunch of work that I really like this year.

Some of my favorite artists in the show include:  Brooks Salzwedel, Sam Saghatelian, Edwin Ushiro, Shepard Fairey, Craig 'Skibs' Barker, Nathan DeYong --  along with a few others!

Andrew from Thinkspace was taking pictures... I saw a few of these that are from his flicker... but there I am in the empty gallery... it looks like I am doing nothing but really I was working organizing nails and hangers! hahaha

A Recent Shoot

This is from one of the shoots I recently shot. It seems that I have just been really slow to get back into the swing of shoots as much as I was this time last year.

Mt. Sac. Art Gallery Opening Reception

Last Minute Labor Day Shoot

A few days before Labor Day weekend I had seen this building that was in the process of being torn down - and I thought I just HAD to SHOOT THERE!! =)    .... BUT.... the construction crew is there ALL the time and then there are people around from morning till 11pm...  PLUS 24 hour security!

I wasn't sure if it would even be possible to get into the location to shoot.... but on Fri. afternoon when the construction crew had left I tried to get inside of the fence. I quickly walked around the site but was seen in minutes and had to take off running!  I wasn't sure if it would even be possible to get in there and shoot ... the only time that I thought I might get in there was on a Sunday - BEFORE they finished clearing the area. I just figured that I would not be able to get in there and shoot since my sister was getting married on that Sunday and by the following weekend they would be finished disposing of the building and rubble.

Which would have been correct.... but it was LABOR DAY weekend which meant that the construction crew would take the Monday off - so at the last minute I got a model - got over there, snuck thru the fences and started to shoot! After a little while we saw the security guards coming by and we took off thru the rubble and archway - thru the bushes and fence and got away with some cool images! Here are 2 from the shoot.

La Municipal Art Gallery Reception Images

The Reception at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery was great!! 3767 people showed up for the reception -it was nice and crowded! I added some images to show the size off the gallery and the amount of people flowing in and out of each of the rooms. The people were just as interesting as the artwork on the walls! I saw all kinds of different cultures, different types of dress, different personality types, people in wheel chairs, in casts, with different types of dogs -yes IN the gallery. My favorite interesting site at the gallery was an old couple. The man was guiding the blind woman- her cane was feeling the room out in front of her - BUT she would still "look" at the artwork! =) The whole mood of the gallery was energetic and exciting!

The first image below is looking into the two rooms that I curated. Three of the awards that were given were pieces that were from the 2 rooms I curated. These other images give you a little idea of the space in the gallery, but do not show 8 more rooms filled with artwork! If your interested in taking a look it will be open till September 27th!! (Info and address below.)

Music

Well.... I had wanted to share some of the music that I like or am listening to as I work. Music is such an important aspect to my mood and inspiration. I like a wide range of music... just about everything ....  well almost- hahaha.  Anyway I had wanted to connect a youtube video but can't seem to figure out why it won't work.... so I am just going to link it for now and figure it out later. =) I won't say who the band is... make you have to go visit the link!

I found them back in 2003 just before they were released in the US. Loved one of their songs and found out it hadn't been released here yet. So I had to wait a month to get the cd-- But it was worth it! Hope you enjoy!

Welded Sculpture Update

I got sooo busy with Magu's exhibition and then with everything else... I just realized that I never showed the finished sculpture work!

I had been taking flat sheets of metal and welding them together to create shapes. I wanted to practice welding to think about some other larger sculpture pieces I want to create that will have metal frames and bases.  -- Here are a few of the finished shapes.

3 Part Series

3 Part Series: Photography, Mixed Media Artwork, Sculpture
I started this series to be able to try and maximize the amount of work that was created for art galleries and publications -- While taking less time to do it. The photography focuses on the human figure in nature, the contrast of shadow and light, of textures, and the beauty of the natural in nature. The Artwork focuses on the human figure, and the blending of digital and traditional art forms. It has also allowed me to use photos as references to attempt new processes of mixing medias.
1. The 3 part Fine Art series is: Photography / Artwork / Sculpture*. The Photography and Artwork are created from the SAME SHOOT. (It is like a 2 for price of 1 deal!! - I am all about multi-tasking... saves time, energy and creates more work with less effort.)
2. I shoot during the daytime with natural light - in nature. Modeling is NUDE. Nudity is taisteful - Exactly the SAME as you can see in my ports. Also if a model doesn't want to show her face or reveal her identity -- That is totally fine, just let me know in advance. (Remind me at the shoot and pose accordingly.)
3. Just to repeat: "Nudity is required." -- My Non-nude work is VERY LIMITED and typically ONLY for models that I have ALREADY worked with. I prefer models that I have trust/ a connection established rather then working with multiple new models = it makes things easier, more comfortable, and creates better images!! At the shoot I WILL shoot ALL of the following: nudes, implieds, headshots, and might even shot a few clothed shots. Shoots last typically for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
4. If model desires she can bring someone to the shoot - no problem. - I have had models bring husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, or just come alone. All the same to me - just give me a heads up. =)
5. All Artwork is based off the nude in nature shoot. Almost all work in the MM Artist/ Painter port came from nudes in nature shots. I will NOT set up a shoot JUST to create artwork from it - it is not worth my time.
6. I offer ONLY trade: 12 edited images sent via email WITHIN 2 weeks of shoot and 1 artwork images within a month via email. (artwork takes a lil longer to create) -- I choose the 12 to edit. Image size is exactly as seen in my MM ports w/ logo on them. Sometimes I send more edits then I offer - just because =) and I also often go back and do artwork of models I have shot in the past -- So my models often get lil surprise bonus images/ artwork even years later! =)
7. Model must be 18 -DUH! =) and must bring ID / sign model release.
8. My style and work is very unique so I'm only looking for models who are seriously interested in the different series I am working on. Images/ Artwork is NOT used on any porn or sexual adult content sites. Work will be created for the Fine Art World usages** - for exhibition and retail at galleries, museums, and website/ profolio.
9. Because I work on both modeled and non -modeled art / photography plus curating gallery shows I am VERY limited on time. I typically do a LIMITED amount of shoots and typically ONLY for the series that I am working on - with some exceptions as favors for models I have worked with repeatedly.
10. MUA, Hair, Stylist - ask me about it when I give you a call.
11. My website is at www.howardhillstudio.com - Where you can find more links to my social networks, etc.
12. If your interested in the series leave a name and number on one of my MM ports and I'll give you a call.
*(sculpture is VERY expensive to make so it will be limited to only a few of the models chosen from the photoshoots. This will be discussed at a later date.)

Don't let the Bed Bugs bite

One of my friends recently moved and found her new place filled with bed bugs. She has since had to move out and get all of her cloths and everything cleaned -yet she is still dealing with them. (She is also left waiting for the return of her deposit)

Anyway - So she was telling me all about the bugs and what they look like, how she'd wake up and they would be on her in the middle of the night!   -- ect. ect.

Well, tonight I am FINALLY getting into bed and I feel this lil tickle on my leg....  and I think to myself... hmmmm what if? but then dismiss the thought.     .... I lay there and Smile and think NAHHHH it is just my thoughts going wild and is really the hairs on my leg adjusting to the sheets... but then i wonder if I felt something again... and  then I just laugh and think about how dumb I am being....   BUT... the longer I lay there the more curious I become... and the more my mind starts imaging that there is something under my covers...

I finally reach for my cell phone and flip the sheet up to look .... and there in the dark is a lil ball of lent from the sheets being recently washed.  -- So I am totally lol at myself for how funny it was that this ball of lent was tickling my leg -WHEN SUDDENLY something moves... and right then my cell phone turns off...  I pop the phone back open and the light comes back on.... I catch site of it... something is moving... but it isn't a bed bug, but rather a lil old tiny moth that had come in because of my light.  It must have landed on the sheet when I pulled the cover up.

I just wanted to share the story of my paranoid thoughts making me question if something was really there in the dark or if it was just all in my head.....

Maybe I'll post some more down the road - I have a bunch of them!! hahaha I might have to see about posting some of my illustrated work and other artwork I had been working on the last few years?! -- But you can see most of it on my myspace!

Old Abstract Photography

Here is some of my older abstract photography -- Just stuff from the last few years. I just like the textures and how some of them are kinda like paintings - I have some other ones I need to find where I saved them too... those really remind me of simplistic paintings, but I love them as "art" - Just not sure that others would feel the same. I also really like how you don't know what your really looking at... makes me want to tell you.... but I shouldn't! hahaha

Welded Sculpture Pieces

I wanted to share something that I just started "playing" with... A few months back I had been thinking about some larger sculpture pieces that would be out door sculptures. As I thought about and sketched out some ideas, I realized that my bases to the sculptures would need to be strong and able to support the weight. I needed to figure out how I was going to accomplish that problem along with a few other ways to connect the pieces to already established bases.

When I was younger, about 13 years old - I would go to work with my dad. There at work my grandpa, had a cutting torch and a welding machine and alllllllll kinds of other things to "play" with. My grandpa would teach me and my cousin how to use all these different tools that they had- and gave us "jobs" to practice on. We learned everything from using bandsaws, the lathe, and other tools -- to working on car parts -changing transmissions, brakes, radiators- anything and everything!! --  I remember one time my cousin and I were taking the back end off of one of the trucks which was up on jack stands. We took a lunch break and during that time there was an earthquake and the truck jumped right off the jack stands and smashed down on the ground! We were lucky not to have been under it!!

Getting back to what I was saying: I remember being in 7th grade and was out in back of the "shop" (their store) with  a huge 6 foot high x 6 foot wide - 1" steel shelved  unit. It had multiple doors on the front that were used for safes, much like a wall of safety deposit boxes. My grandpa gave me the cutting torch left me there to cut it all into smaller chunks of metal. The sparks just chewed holes allllll through my cloths! HAHAHA... Man, I just lol thinking about how I was this short lil kid wearing that huge helmet and thick huge welding gloves cutting away!!

These thoughts came to mind when I ran into my problems with the artwork pieces, and I wondered if welding might be a solution for me. It had been years since I had done anything like that.... MANY years! hahaha  -- So I decided to take a Welding as Sculpture class at Mt. Sac and the class has been great! You can come in for class or come in on ANY other day of the week if you need more time, but better then that - just about all the supplies you need are free to use!!! If anyone is interested in learning -- I think it is the CHEAPEST art class I have ever taken!

I have been really busy working on other artwork and the art exhibit - but I wanted to share a little of what I have been working on in that class - we have been cutting flat sheets of metal and then welding the pieces together to create the different 3D shapes. Starting off with cubes, rectangles and then moving on to curved shapes, next is to combine the different shapes together to create a larger metal sculpture. Other then these specific things, we are able to create anything we want with any of the machines there!

Right now I am just focusing on creating the basic shapes -- so these are obviously unfinished and not "cleaned" up - the larger rectangle has had the welds on the sides ground down. The cube, I just last week welded together. -- I love the way the metal has a stained on burn - I find the colors really pretty, and love the abstract images. You can see that on one of the sides the burn stain (I am sure there is an official name for that) -- It looks like the face of a man, the forehead, bridge of the nose and the darkened eye sockets.....

The Hulu Contagion

Last Dec. I caught the Hulu Contagion =)

I call it that because ever since I started watching the shows on Hulu.com -- they just keep putting more and more new shows on there!!! Hulu is one of my lil addictions!

I have been watching both old and current TV shows. I don't have Tivo or cable, so Hulu is amazing for me to be able to watch! I can miss my regular TV show and watch it later that night or by morning! It is FREE and just has a FEW short commercials in it. I shouldn't admit ALL the shows I watch.... But I will soon have to put a lil list together in another blog - JUST to show how crazy it has become! In my defense... I AM able to watch (listen) as I work on artwork, so it isn't as bad as it seems.

I wanted to share one show I just started to watch called, ART 21. It is a PBS show that has a theme for that particular show and has Artist talking about their work, ideas, ect.  Artist of the 21st century = ART21.  -- You all should drop by and check it out.... and then allow the contagion to spread! hahaha     .... Here let me "help" you:
