Hummingbird Nest

I always love watching hummingbirds - and a few years back I found a lil hummingbird nest on one of our chimes in the backyard. The nest had a lil egg inside of it but then I am not sure what happened to the nest. Recently I have seen so many hummingbirds and have wanted to see another nest -- and within a few days from then....  I found one! It is in my front yard - Here's a pic of it sitting on it's lil nest! (click for full image.)

Artist vs Art

So... I have been checking out a bunch of other artists online and watching so many vids and learning about so many new things - That I just have been feeling a lil bit overwhelmed by it all.

I have been looking for a new way of making the artwork I want and trying a few things. I just have been feeling a lil overpowered by all the ideas and work that I want to make but then can't seem to figure out how to make it look the way I want... and so I feel like I am loosing this fight with the artwork. Some days it is good and "we" are getting along seeing eye to eye and others - nothing I do is good enough -HAHAHA... I feel like I am learning more and will be able to incorporate these different lil things... but in looking in my minds eye of the IDEA of this new finished work.... I just don't see how to put all these PARTS and IDEAS together into ONE finished piece that isn't going to look or feel too busy. So it has been really hard to feel like I am making progress...

I was getting really frustrated and DOWN about it.... but then it hit me that THIS struggle is the ART of what I am creating... It is the dialog between me and the artwork... It is the process and the creative aspect that I love in the design of what I create. When I remembered that then it made it not as hard.... even a lil encouraging... but just a LIL encouraging!  - hahaha

Vids

I have ran into a lil problem with the assemblage work... I don't know what I want to do about the background or what to mount them on... ???? Originally I was planning on doing some light painting or collage on the background. But I am now not sure about it... I don't want to distract from the image the pieces are making themselves... and I kinda like the simplicity and the individual aspects of the parts that are making up the whole.  So it makes me uneasy about what kinda of background/ design they rest on.

So while I have been considering these things and thinking thru them... I have also been considering ONE of three classes: relief/ intagio or screen printing / a few other types of printmaking OR an alternative photography class.... SO... I have been watching these youtube videos on these different types of things that the classes will each offer... It has been very helpful - some of the vids give you great detail and I am able to see EXACTLY what the finished work will look like or things I have/ will need to use.  All of which is great info! (BUT has stirred up more interests and desires to attempt - hahaha ) Plus I began to expand on the types of vids that I was watching - many lil tricks that OTHER people have attempted... so like how to use glue to make a crackled look with paint, or photo-transfers, and just a bunch more. Some of which I have been experimenting with just to see how it works when I DO it. =)

Parts to Make a Whole

Since I have been back home and have been looking for what kinda artwork I really want to focus on... I have decided that I want to be "responsible" with the things that I already have... OR... Is it that I just want to CLEAN up and make room?! haha - In either way, I had decided to work on some more Assemblage work. In the last few days I have made about 10 new pieces from stuff that I have been collecting over the last year or so. Here are a few UNFINISHED pieces...

I am always picking up lil random junk off the ground... things that just catch my eye... I think that it is really cool to just find something that you find artistically interesting or "valuable." Then to piece it all together to create something new with it. I also like that if everyone was to pick up a few random things and EVEN just toss it in the trash the city would look better and save money/ people would feel better about what they are doing... - the lil things.

Transistion

I have been house sitting and so this is the first night all year that I will be actually sleeping in my own bed, and kinda getting back to normal...   It is always a lil weird at first when you go and house sit - you are in a transition OUT of your normal life.... and then when you return home then you go back into a new transition... It typically takes a few days to a week for me to get back to feeling totally normal and fully functioning. I think because the first day your just unpacking, then trying to put everything back into it's place... BOTH physically and then just in getting back into the swing of things...

I am still trying to figure out how to make that transition with my artwork... and I seem to have all the pieces (which is funny because I really like using pieces and layers) but I can't seem to figure out how they are all going to be put together. The beginning of this year has really made me question all the kinds of artwork I like and do -- and just has been provoking me to think more about it and about what I want it to express or look like...  -- while I loved doing the photo shoots, and loved the shots.... they don't seem to really fit into what I am attempting to do currently. They were a great chance to practice and study... and things like that always seem to connect with some other idea or door I want to go thru later down the road... I have really noticed how my work and my interests seem to circle....   I will have an idea and do something but then quit and then a year later that idea will be revisited with other ideas that I have attempted... it is odd.

Maybe all these ideas - these pieces will all come together and make some larger, stronger body of work but then it is just hard to know when to look for a new piece so i can connect two sections together or.... if a piece I am hanging onto is just a transition piece... or from another puzzle =)

Rainy Days and Mondays

Well, the rain and the cold have been kinda hindering me from shooting.  So I have just been trying to stay warm and bundled up! While I have been in doors I have been looking for other ways of doing my work that doesn't require me to make prints and have frames...  but new ways that will still have my similar artwork and style but on canvas or some other type of expression other then printing on paper. I have a few ideas but then I need to see about getting some more information on them.....   I have also been looking into a bunch of types of graffiti style artwork - I really have always loved it but then really have issues about painting on other peoples property - I LOVE to see it... but then I just kinda feel bad about small business owners who then I would create stress in their lives and something unplanned for them to deal with... so I have been thinking about alternative ways to create street art... I have journal notes of ideas that I had a few years ago but have never gone thru with creating them.... but recently I have been watching a bunch of Youtube vids of some beautiful work and it just makes me want to go do some of my own! =)

More Shoots

Been kinda busy shooting some different types of shoots... trying things out. I think that just from the act of trying out different things you really learn a lot! Learn about what works and doesn't work for you - what you like, dislike, and just get a feel for something different. Each kind of modeling and photography really needs and asks for something different. So like for a time period piece might have a totally different look, feel, mood, ect - then a fashion shoot. I find these differences kinda interesting because it really is more then just going out and just  "shooting." Sometimes it is harder to get a shot with your camera - that you see in your MIND, and think will be really easy to get! =) Well, the models all were great to work with and loved the shots that we got! =)

Photo Play

The last few days I have been doing some shooting of different things - textures, birds out on the wires and trees, sunsets from the 99¢ store parking lot, deformed fruits - and just about anything else that has caught my eye. I am really wanting to make 2010 as productive as I can make it - I have a couple of shoots set up and I'm hoping to see about starting some of the sculpture work I have been planning... see how much time allows for it... till then here are some recent shots.

Hidden Heart <3

I am always seeing "heart" shapes everywhere.... I see them in oil stains on the street, in the way that a piece of string folds over in the wind. I see them in the holes that you can find in old trees or the leaves of some trees... Hearts seem to be everywhere.... I use to think that they were a man made shape... but in recent years I have come to believe that they are a natural shape that can be found all over nature. =)

This is a recreated version of an older piece... and I wanted it to be my end of the year blog art piece. =) If you look in the piece.... you can see where my heart is hidden. =)

Lost Sounds

I was just thinking about different sounds that I heard while growing up - just anything and everything that created sounds like old dvds going into the machine. The way a tape deck, 8 track, or the OLD car push channel buttons looked, felt and the sound as you pushed them. I was thinking about the way that when you transitioned thru channels on the old radios or dial tvs - the click click click or the static moving in and out of the stations.... all that noise and sounds.

How all those sounds that a whole culture has grown up and grown old too... have disappeared with the new digital age.

And how odd it is to think that when your watching an old movie there are all these types of sounds that are heard that you KNOW what they are or meant (like a telephone that has been left off the hook.)  because you lived thru them...   But kids today have no idea what those sounds are or mean. If it was a warning or notifying you about something...   It isn't a "bad" thing that they don't - just odd to think about.

I was also thinking back to OLDER times... and all the sounds of nature that we no longer can hear - even SILENCE has been "silenced" hahaha...  Just the thought of sitting silently for longer then 5 minutes is not something that we often do - muchless days or weeks.... makes me wonder how vastly different our lives are and our ways of seeing life and thinking about it....
